Set in semi-rural/suburban County Galway, just on the outskirts of Galway City, this contemporary house which reflects the ethos of the Irish vernacular style has recently been completed. As the house is fronting onto a very busy road our proposal was for a ‘U’ shaped house plan that wrapped around a private courtyard accessible from all living areas at ground floor. The courtyard provides a quiet, very private outdoor space for the family to enjoy. Externally, natural materials have been used including local stone facing, white rendered walls, high performance windows and a full height cedar clad wall facing into the private courtyard to provide a softer/warmer material to lift the appearance of the enclosed outdoor space.
