Seven temporary classrooms for primary school

Doughiska, Galway

The east of Galway city has seen a considerable increase in the population and in particular the Doughiska neighbourhood. With the increase in the population come demands for social and community facilities. The proposed cabins will be temporary until the permanent primary school is built. The temporary school will consist of five individual classrooms and an adjacent staff/resource room. Given the temporary nature of the proposed primary school, the school consists of seven single-storey pre-fabricated cabins. In terms of external finishes of the pre-fabricated cabins our intention was to depart slightly from the standard recognisable aesthetic of portable cabins that are used for schools around the country and soften the appearance of the three cabins by introducing external timber cladding for two of the cabins and white render finish to the central, slightly larger cabin. Also a timber pergola type structure is proposed for the entrance approach into the ā€˜Uā€™ shaped courtyard that will help to mark the main entrance.
